And Now, The Official Quotulatiousness Endorsement
I thought I'd been pretty clear in my position, but I've had more than one person ask (and that wasn't the one person who reads this blog) who I support in the upcoming US Presidential election. Just to do a quick roundup, here are some points to consider:
- I'm a declared libertarian, but I can't vote in US elections due to the scurvy trick of Americans not allowing non-Americans to vote. If I could vote, I'd be voting for Michael Badnarik.
- Back in August, I declared this blog a Kerry-free zone.
- I don't much like George W. Bush, but I'm even less happy with Kerry.
- I was in favour of the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, and I still feel that the long-term benefit to the inhabitants of those two countries was worth the risks.
- I think the Patriot Act is a huge bolus of bad legislation that carries with it far more danger to civil liberties than can possibly be compensated for by any theoretical degree of extra security.
- I don't think either candidate will be particularly friendly to Canada or do much to improve relations between Canada and the United States.
On balance, I'd prefer to see Bush win the election, because I think the fight against Al Qaeda is the most pressing issue for the US, and Kerry clearly does not share that belief.
